Kot in Hokm: What It Is and How It Scores
A kot is Hokm's big result: one side takes the first seven tricks of a hand before the other side wins a single one.
What is a kot?
A kot (کوت) is a sweep: your side wins 7 tricks before the other side wins any. The hand ends at once, as every hand does when a side reaches 7 tricks.
How many points is a kot worth?
A plain win is 1 point. A kot by the Hâkem's side is worth 2 points, and a kot against the Hâkem is worth 3. A match is played to 7 points, so one or two kots can settle it in a few hands.
| Result | Points |
|---|---|
| Win 7 tricks, the other side has at least 1 | 1 |
| Kot by the Hâkem's side (7 to 0) | 2 |
| Kot against the Hâkem (7 to 0) | 3 |
Is it still a kot if the other side wins one trick?
No. One trick for the other side, at any point before you reach 7, turns a kot into a plain 1-point win.
You are the Hâkem and lead 6 tricks to 0. Your rival takes the next trick, then you take the seventh. How many points do you score?
One. A kot needs the first seven tricks with none lost, so your rival's single trick turned a 2-point kot into a plain win.
How do you stop a kot?
When a hand is lost, play for one sure trick instead of giving up: it saves you 1 point, or 2 if you are the Hâkem. Keep a high card or a Hokm card back for the trick you can be sure of winning.
